The ability to experience how academic theory informs and influences governance, politics, and policy-making can be gained through participation in conferences, leadership seminars, and internships. These pages will highlight some of the opportunities for student involvement in politics and public policy.
PLEN: Public Leadership Education Network
The Public Leadership Education Network (PLEN) is a national organization entirely focused on preparing women for leadership positions in the public policy venue.
PLEN coordinates seminars in Washington, D.C. for women students from colleges and universities across the United States to gain first-hand experience on how public policy is constructed and implemented at the national level. During these various themed seminars, students meet with and learn from women leaders in the Congress, the courts, the public and private sector, as well as those who work in policy research, the media, and advocacy.
In addition to educational seminars, PLEN sponsors summer internships in Washington, D.C. Although these internships do not offer a stipend, they are among the lowest cost internship and offer customized placement. Students can gain course credit and can participate in leadership seminars while completing their internship.
**Plans are in the works to attend the Women, Law and Public Policy Seminar to be held in November 2011. This seminar is designed for students planning to attend law school or interested in law-related careers (such as policy work). Check with the Political Science Department Chair for more information. Registration deadline in mid-October 2011.**
